  1. Automata Theory & Formal Languages:
    • Regular languages, deterministic/non-deterministic finite automata (DFA/NFA).
    • Chomsky Hierarchy (L3⊂L2⊂L1⊂L0L_3 \subset L_2 \subset L_1 \subset L_0).
    • Context-free grammars and Pushdown Automata (PDA).
  2. Computability & Decidability:
    • Turing machines, Church-Turing thesis.
    • The Halting Problem (H={⟨M,w⟩∣M halts on w}H = \{ \langle M, w \rangle \mid M \text{ halts on } w \}) is undecidable via diagonalization.
    • Rice’s Theorem: Any non-trivial semantic property of Turing machines is undecidable.
  3. Complexity Theory:
    • Classes P\mathbf{P}, NP\mathbf{NP}, NP-complete\mathbf{NP}\text{-complete}, and PSPACE\mathbf{PSPACE}.
    • Polynomial-time reductions (A≤pBA \le_p B).

If LL is a regular language, then there exists a constant p≥1p \ge 1 (the pumping length) such that any word w∈Lw \in L with ∣w∣≥p|w| \ge p can be partitioned into w=xyzw = xyz satisfying:

  1. ∣y∣≥1|y| \ge 1
  2. ∣xy∣≤p|xy| \le p
  3. ∀i≥0,  xyiz∈L\forall i \ge 0, \; x y^i z \in L
∀w∈L,  (∣w∣≥p  ⟹  ∃x,y,z:w=xyz∧∣y∣>0∧∣xy∣≤p∧∀i≥0,xyiz∈L)\forall w \in L, \; (|w| \ge p \implies \exists x,y,z: w = xyz \land |y| > 0 \land |xy| \le p \land \forall i \ge 0, xy^iz \in L)

The Halting Problem Undecidability Proof Sketch

Section titled “The Halting Problem Undecidability Proof Sketch”

Assume a decider H(⟨M⟩,w)H(\langle M \rangle, w) exists that outputs 11 if MM halts on ww, and 00 otherwise. Construct machine DD:

D(⟨M⟩)={loop foreverif H(⟨M⟩,⟨M⟩)=1haltif H(⟨M⟩,⟨M⟩)=0D(\langle M \rangle) = \begin{cases} \text{loop forever} & \text{if } H(\langle M \rangle, \langle M \rangle) = 1 \\ \text{halt} & \text{if } H(\langle M \rangle, \langle M \rangle) = 0 \end{cases}

Running D(⟨D⟩)D(\langle D \rangle) yields an immediate contradiction: DD halts on ⟨D⟩\langle D \rangle if and only if DD loops forever on ⟨D⟩\langle D \rangle. Hence, no such decider HH can exist.
